  1. Day 1

    Fukuoka to Beppu

Meet the private car and English-speaking guide in Fukuoka and continue to Beppu. Visit the Myoban hot-spring area and its yunohana huts before settling into the accommodation for the first of two nights.

  2. Day 2

    Steam, bamboo and regional food

Explore Beppu’s hot-spring landscapes. A bamboo-craft experience can be proposed if a host is available, followed by steam-cooked food and a walk around Kannawa.

  3. Day 3

    Across the highlands to Aso

Travel towards Aso through Yufuin and the Yamanami Highway area, with a lunch stop around Kurokawa Onsen. Consider Daikanbo, Aso Shrine and its surrounding town before the overnight stay.

  4. Day 4

    Aso’s grasslands and springs

Use Kusasenri as a starting point for the highland scenery, with a riding experience only if suitable arrangements are confirmed. Continue towards Shirakawa Spring and the surrounding countryside. Volcanic access rules determine where the day can go.

  5. Day 5

    Into Amakusa

Continue by road towards Amakusa, leaving room for the transfer and lunch. Visit the coastal community of Sakitsu, with any church access arranged around local requirements, then stay in Amakusa.

  6. Day 6

    Amakusa to Nagasaki

Discuss a pottery visit or dolphin-watching outing before the planned crossing towards the Shimabara Peninsula. Continue through the Unzen area to Nagasaki. Ferry conditions and available time determine the day’s order.

  7. Day 7

    Nagasaki’s meeting of cultures

A Gunkanjima cruise is one option if operations and sea conditions allow. Combine the city’s history around Oura, Glover Garden and Dejima with a proposed shippoku dinner, arranging the visits and restaurant in advance.

  8. Day 8

    Return to Fukuoka

Travel from Nagasaki to Fukuoka by private car, with the departure time selected for the onward flight or next stay. Allow space for traffic and the airport connection.

Adapting the journey

  • Seven days

Reduce the Beppu stay to one night and revisit the balance of visits and transfer time.

  • Stay in Unzen

Add an overnight on the Shimabara Peninsula before continuing to Nagasaki.

  • Continue to Goto

Discuss an island extension from Nagasaki, checking transport and the island itinerary together.
